Here, I will tell you some of the history of medical robotics.
Medical robots have been around for about 25 years, but of course, were not as common then as they are now. The first robot was used in surgery in 1985. The robot, the PUMA 560, was used to place a needle for brain biopsy. Of course, there were people in the room that could turn it off if something was to go wrong.
In 1988, the PROBOT was used in surgery by Dr. Senthil Nathan at Guy's and St.Thomas' hospital in London. A bit later, the Da Vinci Surgical system was introduced. The Da Vinci Surgical system is made up of three main components: A surgeon's console, a robotic cart with 4 arms (one to control the camera and three to manipulate instruments), and a high-definition 3D vision system.
The da Vinci senses the surgeon’s hand movements and moves them electronically into tiny movements to manipulate the small instruments. It also detects and takes away any mistakes in the surgeon's hand movements, so that the same mistakes are not made by the robot. The camera used in the system provides a picture showed on the surgeon's console.
